The Alien and Latest Ham Radio Deluxe Installed

I recently purchased a 2021 Dell Alienware R10 with a Ryzen 9 3900xt CPU for my home QTH and I have the latest Ham Radio Deluxe installed on it already. My previous Hewlett Packard (HP) i5 SFF desktop served me well for many years, but I needed a faster CPU for website development and YouTube. Although the new computer is very fast, it is also very loud. If I can’t quiet the fans down, I will have to move it to my garage with my other loud equipment (miners).

I highly recommend the HP SFF desktops for ham radio. Here's a link to available ones on E-Bay. I had one with a RS232 DB9 serial port for the CW interface I bought years ago. I'm sad to say my new PC doesn't have one.

Why did I choose a gaming PC? The reason behind my decision to opt for a gaming PC primarily revolves around the exceptional CPU performance it offers and the price. While the machine hardware is certainly commendable, the Ryzen 9 3900x stands out with its remarkable capabilities, particularly when it comes to handling various business tasks. Additionally, this CPU is expected to deliver seamless streaming experiences, which is why I am eagerly anticipating resuming my YouTube streaming endeavors in the near future.

Installing Ham Radio Deluxe

I ran into two problems while installing a fresh copy of the latest Ham Radio Deluxe software.

1. VCRUNTIME140.dll is not installed.

2. I have too many installations of HRD and I need to clear a license. We're allowed 5 licenses of HRD to be installed on 5 PC's. I was using them all.

Here's what I did to fix these issues.

Error: VCRUNTIME140.dll was not found

I posted a question on Ham Radio Deluxe support forum, mainly just to see how long it would take someone to reply with the correct answer and I'm happy to say it was only an hour or two before Ferry posted a direct link to the download I needed to fix the problem. So here it is: https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x86.exe

It's just a matter of downloading and installing the Microsoft package in the link above. The next time I tried HRD it loaded, yahoo!, but it gave me an error message about the license, so that's next.

Ham Radio Deluxe License Keys

If you need to retrieve you registration number for HRD like I did,

Go to https://keyretrieval.hamradiodeluxe.com and use the email address associated with your purchase to retrieve your key and have it emailed to you. In the unlikely event that your key is not found, then contact the sales team at sales@hrdsoftwarellc.com and they will get one generated for you and send it back to you via email.

You'll get an e-mail with a couple of useful links,

Easy Peasy

There's nothing like a well oiled machine and when it comes to HRD sometimes it is really surprising. 1 I appreciated they have made it so easy to retrieve license keys, because it didn't use to be that way. 2. I appreciate the support forum is active and knowledgeable Hams take time to answer questions.

Thanks Ham Radio Deluxe for a unstressful experience loading the software on a new PC. Kudos!

I recently had the same issues on a new computer that I plan to use portable. I had a couple of old computers taking up part of my total of 5 licenses. No big deal to delete them. The thing I wanted to share is my conversion to the MariaDB database. I was having all kinds of speed and memory problems with the HRD database. I found a Forum suggestion that said the fix was a different database. I only have 16,000 records but apparently that is enough to bog the system down. I followed the 25 pages of screen shot instructions and switched over to MariaBD. Problem solved! Everything runs fast and perfectly.

Thanks much for the update. I always enjoy your posts. Many don’t apply directly to my situation, but they let me live vicariously. 🙂 I too purchased a new computer for my station about a year ago from Costco. It’s a Lenovo i5 laptop with 16GB of RAM. Since it’s only used to run ham associated apps it’s more than adequate for my situation (with the addition of a monitor and keyboard). I was really sweating starting from scratch to rebuild my station software suite, especially the sound settings for digital modes, It turned out to be very easy though I did review some of your past videos re computer settings (thank you for keeping them available). Stay well!

I too am a happy user of HRD. I have also tried the Maria DB but ran into an issue and switched back to the HRD Access DB.

Problem I have is I keep the HRD DB file in a folder in Dropbox. That way I can have my PC and Laptops access the DB (Only one at a time) thus allowing me to not need to export/import the DB on different PC’s or laptop when going to the field.

With Maria there seems to be files and sub folders all over the HD and am not sure how to setup my system to use Maria with Dropbox. Maybe it isn’t as hard as it seems but I just couldn’t get it go.

Maybe someone else has accomplished this using Maria with keeping the log files and other needed files on Dropbox.

Thanks,
Gary

Thanks John for the updated information. One question I have is if you are replacing the old computer with the original software installed on it and are now going to install a fresh copy of the software on your new computer, why do you have to purchase a new license? If you are not using the software on your old computer that is being replaced, then I would think the current license should be enough.

Thoughts?

HRD license allows for up to five computers. If you need to remove one of them from your license go to the HRD web site and log in to your license manager app. From there it will show the current list of computers on your license where you can then remove the one you no longer need.
