POTA Gulf Islands National Seashore and Fort Pickens

I thoroughly enjoyed my POTA Gulf Islands National Seashore experience. Recently I activated Gulf Islands National Seashore (K-0661) from Fort Pickens Campground in Florida. What a beautiful spot for operating Ham radio!

The Gulf Islands National Seashore and Fort Pickens in Florida is an outdoor paradise for nature lovers. It includes a wide range of ecosystems, including barrier islands, dunes, salt marshes, and maritime forests. These habitats are home to a variety of wildlife species, including sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, and shorebirds. Visitors can explore the park on foot or by bike along trails that lead to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The park also offers a variety of activities such as kayaking and boating on the gulf waters.

Operating Position

I'll post some pictures as soon as I can and I'll have a video of operating and of course my side kick, Mr. B.

I mainly operated from Ft. Pickens campground and in my camper. The weather was beautiful one day, so I got out and used my Elecraft KX2 and from the picnic table.

We were there last spring and while I had a successful activation numbers were low. The noise was S6 + on 20 and just as bad on 40. This year I’m heading up to the fishing pier and hope it’s quieter away from all the inverters in the CG ! Great place as you stated and if you get there between M-W you may see a practice show from the Blue Angels !!
